About Me - Your Personal, VIRTUAL, Reading Coach

I am a certified, licensed teacher with a Master of Education specializing in Reading and Literacy with over 25 years of experience working with students striving to help them become more successful, engaged readers. Parents are always asking me what they can do to help their child be a better reader or even where to go for help, and this website is a great place to start finding answers to your questions so that I can truly become your personal reading coach.
Reading is a valuable skill in today's world, and reading well is critical to success in life. My goals are two-fold: I want to support parents in their efforts to help their child succeed at reading by building confident parents who CAN help their child become a better reader, and I want to help all students become successful, joyful, readers. My favorite part of the reading tutoring process is to see the light come on in a student's eyes when they realize they can read - they CAN learn to be successful, competent readers; they just have to keep reading! I hope this website helps YOU help your child. I would love to talk to you personally about any reading questions you may have and I am available for consultations by appointment.

My Reading Journey

Picture
I have always enjoyed reading. When I was little, my parents or my siblings would always read to me and I LOVED it! I love pretending I am my favorite character having adventures all over the world - and sometimes the universe! Good books are truly magical to me. You can learn so much about people, places and topics you may not want to really experience in person, but helps you become a deeper, richer, more sympathetic thinker and human being.

I never realized until I was much older and became a teacher that reading is frustrating and difficult for many people and that they have never experienced the joy I have felt reading a good book. I want to change that - I want to find a way to help people get inside the covers of wonderful books and experience all the magic, adventures, happiness, challenges, loves and heartaches that live there, without having to experience everything in person or leave their home.

I taught junior high English and Special Education for many years, struggling to find ways to reach those students who hated reading, yet loved having a book read out-loud to them. After many phone calls and discussions with fellow teachers in my school and district, I went back to school to get Master of Education degree, specializing in Literacy - especially reading. I was so excited to learn about many wonderful, research-based strategies that truly help students feel like successful readers - helping them see personal growth and progress and the light at the end of the tunnel.

I began a home-based tutoring business and became a Reading Specialist at a wonderful school for many years. I learned so much during this time about how to tutor students, parents and teachers in best reading strategies, practices and approaches that are peer-reviewed, replicatable, evidence-based scientific research. These strategies can help all readers look forward to reading a good book or learning about new discoveries and information.

I truly believe our minds can be the greatest special effects maker in the world and beyond and reading good books develops our minds in rich, satisfying ways. We learn how to connect and sympathize with people and situations in good books that vary greatly across the globe and the universe and these connections build strength, connectivity and compassion for others in ourselves. As both a mother and a teacher, I find these traits to be so valuable in today's world.
