How much do you know about your student's reading skills?
Start by answering this Questionnaire about your student: (This is for your personal use and if you have questions you can reach out to me here)
Do you know what a successful, competent reader looks like and that learning to read is a developmental process? If not, refer to Four Stages of Reading Development.
What reading level should your child be reading on for their age and grade? If you aren't sure, ask your child's classroom teacher or refer to Grade and Text Level Correspondences.
Do you know your child's current reading level or stage of reading development? (Classroom teacher should be able to help with this if elementary age). If not, read through the Stages of Reading Development and decide which stage best represents your child's reading abilities.
Do you know what level they should be reading on independently? Instructionally?
Do you know what level they should only be listening to as trying to read it would be frustrating to them?
If your child is just beginning to learn to read and "Breaking the Code", do they know the alphabet thoroughly?
Can they recognize and write all the letters of the alphabet quickly - uppercase and lower case?
Do they know all the sounds the letters make quickly?
Can they hear the individual sounds in words? (Phonemic Awareness)
What types of books does your student enjoy listening to or reading (even pretend reading) on their own?
Do you know how to help your child find books that interest them on their independent reading level? (book finding sites)
What does your student request you to read out-loud to them?
What are your student's top three interests/hobbies/likes? Can you name more?
Does your child have any disabilities?
If your student attends school, how is your child's relationship with the current classroom teacher? Past classroom teachers?
What part of reading does your child find easy or like the best? (Ask them)
What part of reading does your child find the most difficult, challenging or frustrating? (Ask them)
What are you MOST concerned about with your child's reading?
